What is a virtual race and how does it work?

virtual race is a self-motivated competition that is organized online where you complete a specific distance by running, walking or cycling on a date and time of your choosing, anywhere in the world. This is a great option for those who cannot attend a group run but still want to contribute to the cause and earn an awesome finisher medal!

Simply register for one of our virtual runs, complete the distance anytime and anywhere you desire (even on a treadmill), send us your finish time via email or social media. We will mail you a finisher’s medal as soon as possible after registration. We try to get them to you as soon as possible so you have it the day you complete your run...but don’t open until you’ve earned it!

 

Who can participate?

Anyone! Young or old, fast or slow – we encourage participants of all ability levels.

 

Can a non-Buffalo resident participate?

Of Course! We can ship to anywhere in the United States so whether you are from Buffalo or not you can register and participate in any of our events.

 

Do I have to complete the entire distance all at once?

No. While many participants complete their run all at once, it is not required. What we are doing here at Run4Buffalo is providing motivation to help with your personal goal setting, while raising money for causes important to the community we live in. If that means you need to break up your run into multiple segments, so be it. Just be sure to track your distance and time each day and send us the totals so we can update our results page run4buffaloresults@gmail.com

 

What if I can’t complete my run during the race period?

No worries. Your medal will be mailed to you as soon as possible after you register. You can still send us your results and photos and we will add them to the results page.

We include dates in all of our events when we announce them. This allows us to focus on that particular event for a specified period of time. 

We sometimes have medals left after a race period ends. You can still register for these events on that particular runs page. You will also find the medals in our store.

 

How do I track my distance and time my run?

Results are submitted on the honor system, so you can track your distance and time however you like.

The most accurate way to do this is by using a Running GPS watch, but there are also several free smartphone apps available for iPhones and Android phones that you can use.

 

When will I receive my medal?

Medals are shipped to participants shortly after they register and pay the race entry fee. We like to get the medals out as soon as possible so you have them the day you run your race. You should be rewarded immediately for your hard work – But remember do not open the medal until you’ve earned it.

We ship all medals at once via USPS mail. If the total weight of your order is 16 oz or less, they are shipped via First Class mail. If the weight is more than 16 oz, we will ship them via Priority Mail. Either way, we’ll send you an email with a USPS Tracking Number when your medal ships.

International shipping takes 3-5 days to prepare. Shipments are sent via USPS. There is an additional charge of $8 for all International shippments. Please contact us for large groups as their are additional shipping charges for anything over 4lbs. 

*Occasionally, due to unexpected demand for a specific race or manufacturing delays beyond our control, there may be slight delays with mailing. We will communicate these on each race's registration page and our Facebook page as soon as we are aware of the delay.

Will I receive a race bib? 

Yes. Custom design waterproof race bibs are available starting in 2018. Numbers will be assigned by our system. For virtual runners it will be shipped with your race packet. For our group run participants you will receive them on the morning of the run. Names will not be printed on the bib our system will assign a number and record it on our results tracking spreadsheet. So the name you register with is the name that will be seen on the spreadsheet. There will be space available for you to record your distance, time and pace.

Where do I send my results?

You can submit your results via email. Email address for results and photo submission is RUN4BUFFALO@GMAIL.COM Please include your bib number, distance, time and picture in your email. We will add your time and photos to our results page. You can also submit your time through anyone of our social media pages.

 

Do I have to submit my results in order to receive my medal?

No. We will mail your medal to you regardless of whether or not you submit your finish time. That said, we encourage all participants to submit the results of each of their races. We feel this adds an element of competition to the race event and gives others a goal to reach when they set out to complete their virtual run!

 

How do I register multiple people?

You may purchase as many medals as you want for a given distance. After selecting your distance just add the amount of medals you need to your cart and checkout. If you need medals for another distance simply continue shopping and add the next distance to your cart and proceed through the checkout process. 

Orders with multiple registrations will be shipped to one location so if you are ordering for multiple people you will receive all of the medals. We offer discounts on group orders for current events only. Please see below regarding group registration.

 

Do you offer group discounts?

Yes. Group rates are availble for current events only and vary by event and number of people in your group. Just send us an email with the details and we will set up a promo code for your group to use at checkout! RUN4BUFFALO@GMAIL.COM

This is a great opportunity for running clubs who have regularly scheduled fun runs and want to make one of them “special” by offering a cool medal to interested participants. 

 

Can I register for past events?

Events will remain open until all of the medals for that event have been sold. You can view all our runs in the Events tab of the menu bar. Our website controls our inventory, so if you are physically able to register for a past event, that means we still have medals available. Feel free to register! – You are still encouraged to submit your results after you complete your run, but that’s not required.

We will still make a donation to that event’s featured charity for your registration!

 

Are there any hidden fees?

We don’t tack on any processing fees, taxes, or even domestic shipping and handling charges – everything is included in the prices you see.

 

Does Run4Buffalo organize group runs?

Yes. In our experience the biggest draw back of a virtual run is that it doesn't provide the feeling of running with a group of people. In an effort to bridge the gap and offer something unique we will be hosting at least one outdoor group run for each virtual event. Details of the group run will be announced with the event details. 

 

If I want to run in the outdoor group run how do I register and pay for my medal?

You will register exactly the same way simply select the group run option when adding the item to your cart. We will not ship your medal and instead bring it with us the day of the group run.

Is the group run a certified course? 

No. The group runs are casual run walk/events and are untimed. They are intended to be an opportunity for anyone who wants to run with others instead of virtually on your own. 

How much of each registration fee goes to charity?

The mission of Run4Buffalo is to improve lives in the Western NY community by giving back and donating what we can.  No amount is too small! Every donation can make an impact! Visit our Charities page to see all of our featured charities.

We are committed to donate as much as possible determined by the amount of registrations for each event. Every single person who participates in our virtual races is making a difference. We donate a minimum of $6 for every registration. If the event sells out we will make an additional bonus donation. All donation letters are posted on our charities page.

Our events both help spread awareness and raise funds for worthwhile causes, but if you are looking to maximize your contribution to a specific charity, by all means, please donate to them directly. You will find links on our charities page that take you directly to that charity's donation site.

Do you host events that are not charity related? 

No. All of our events have a charity component. In 2018 we added a special event series that have multi-piece medal designs. These events can have 4 - 10 different legs where each leg has a medal that connects to other medals within the series to create one Mega Medal! These individual legs can also be done as one off events if you'd like, but to assemble your Mega Medal you'll need to compete in all legs of a given series. We do not name a benefiting charity for these events because of the length of time it takes to complete the series (6 - 18 months) that said during the last leg of an event series we will put forth 3 different charities and allow all participants who completed the entire series to vote and select the charity. A donation will be made to the winning charity at the completion of the series.   

Is Run4Buffalo a nonprofit organization?

Run4Buffalo is not a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization, but don’t let our tax classification fool you. Just because we are not officially classified as a charity by the IRS does not mean we can’t raise funds for many worthwhile organizations that are.

 

Is my registration fee tax deductible?

Unfortunately, no. While a portion of your registration fee will be donated to charity, we are not a 501(c)3 charity and are therefore unable to provide tax receipts to each individual registrant.

 

Can I make an additional donation to a charity?

Yes. Please visit our charities page and you will see links that will take you to the featured charity’s website. If you would like to make an additional donation, please follow the link and donate directly to the charity via their website. By doing so, your donation will be both instant and tax deductible. There is no reason for us (or anyone else) to ever act as a middleman between you and a charity when you want to make an additional donation.

 

How do I know you’re actually donating money to charity?

We at Run4Buffalo believe in complete transparency in this regard and post any acknowledgement letters we receive on our Charities page. We like to have personal relationships with the featured charities and would be more than happy to provide contacts for each, if you would like to contact them regarding our donation.

 

How do you pick the charities you support?

We are here for the purpose of supporting the Buffalo community, so all of the charities we feature have ties to the Buffalo community. We are always open to suggestions by Run4Buffalo participants. While we can’t feature them all, we will research and select organizations we feel best fit the theme of a given race. In fact, most of our virtual run ideas begin with the charity selection process.

How do I become a Run4Buffalo race ambassador?

Our Ambassador Program is an opportunity for participants who are passionate about a given cause to become the face of one of our charity events! You might be a marathon runner, or a casual runner. Most importantly, you embody the strength and togetherness of the running community. You will serve as a race representative and we will look to you to help us promote our event and the Run4Buffalo mission. Getting involved is simple.
